SmartSahara Case Study

EnerCorp Resolves Internal Sand Quantification and Monitoring Issue with Innovative New Solution: SmartSahara

Location: Permian

The Problem

One of EnerCorp’s long-term clients, that uses the Sahara Advanced Sand Cyclone on their wells during flowback, was looking for a way to get real-time internal sand quantification and monitoring.

While the Sahara Advanced Sand Cyclone removed over 97% of sand from their production stream, the client had an issue with sand slugs plugging off the blowdown without notice. This meant that they required constant manual supervision of the site to ensure there were no blockages.

The Solution

EnerCorp’s skilled teams of Sales and Engineering got to work immediately, figuring out a way to internally quantify the amount of sand in the Sahara in real time while monitoring for issues like sand slugs. Through careful planning, equipment design, pressure testing, and function testing, and tight collaboration with Rocsole, EnerCorp developed a brand new solution: The SmartSahara powered by Rocsole.

The SmartSahara powered by Rocsole is designed to remove over 97% of sand from the production stream—while providing highly accurate and up-to-the-minute sand quantification data and monitoring.

Not only did EnerCorp create an innovative new product not previously available in the market, we strengthened our partnership with industry-leader Rocsole in the process.

The Results

Using this innovative new solution, the client experienced a number of benefits:
  • Bullet Point Icon

Immediate response to issues: The SmartSahara provides real-time visibility into issues like sand slugs and real time visibility after choke bumps. The operator no longer has to wait to spot issues that cause damage and result in downtime.

  • Bullet Point Icon
Continuous sand level monitoring: Instead of guessing when to dump the sand, the client can see exactly how much sand is captured by the Sahara at all times and set the Sahara to dump based on volume of sand instead of timed intervals.
  • Bullet Point Icon
Optimized labor costs: The client no longer requires manual supervision of the site to ensure there are no blockages as a result of sand slugs. They can monitor the site remotely and only send crews when needed.
  • Bullet Point Icon
Improved worker safety: No more strained backs or accidental slips and falls when manually quantifying sand. The SmartSahara provides real-time results automatically, enhancing crew safety.
  • Bullet Point Icon
Reduced number of blowdowns: Since the SmartSahara has a real-time quantification, the substantial accumulator can be fully utilized without fear of sand carryover. This reduces the number of blowdowns to an open top tank, minimizing environmental exposure, decreasing trucking for water and sand disposal, and requiring less personnel to physically be present on site. This also massively reduces the erosion potential of valves and piping by lessening the number of cycles with sand-laden fluid.
  • Bullet Point Icon
Closed loop quantification: In environmentally sensitive areas and sour gas wells that must stay fully contained, the SmartSahara can still provide sand quantification rates regardless of what enclosed vessel the sand is being dumped to.

The client is so pleased with the results of the SmartSahara that they are ready to trial it on additional wells.
