Driver Safety Tips for Back to School
With summer winding down and the new school year kicking off, we wish all students, teachers, and administrators a fun and safe return! We would also like to remind drivers of a couple back-to-school safety tips.
- Watch for School Zones: Always be on the lookout for school zone signs and adhere to the reduced speed limits. Children may be crossing or waiting for buses.
- Stop for School Buses: If a school bus has its stop sign extended, you must stop your vehicle and wait until the sign is retracted and the bus begins moving.
- Be Mindful of Darting Kids: Kids can sometimes dart into the road unexpectedly. Stay alert, especially near schools and playgrounds.
- Observe Crosswalks: Be prepared to stop for crossing guards and children using crosswalks. Give them plenty of space and time to cross safely.
- Avoid Distractions: Keep your focus on the road. Avoid using your phone or engaging in other distractions while driving in school zones.
- Watch for Bicyclists: Students on bicycles may be on their way to school. Give them space and be cautious when passing them.
- Check Blind Spots: Make sure to check your mirrors and blind spots before changing lanes or making turns, especially in areas with high pedestrian traffic.
